Description

The blue tears are caused by dinoflagellates—single-celled organisms that emit a soft blue glow when disturbed by movement in the water. Their flickering presence, appearing and vanishing with each ripple, lends the ocean an air of mystery and dreamlike beauty. This installation merges the imagined creatures of myth with the natural phenomenon of bioluminescent life, attempting to explore the unseen, powerful forces beneath the surface of water. In East Asian folklore, many mythological beings are associated with water—such as the Kappa, the Nure-onna, and the Shuihu. These figures are often tinged with tragedy, echoing the dual nature of water: it can carry, but it can also drown. Could these sorrows be quietly preserved within the water itself?

This work creates an immersive environment that weaves together the ocean, bioluminescent algae (commonly known as “blue tears”), and mythological forces through a variety of light-based visual expressions.
